Day 16

Ok.. I tried to cram two days worth of work in 1 day. Pretty evil! Did I mention meetings too? I came up with some interesting deadlines as well. Yikes, now have to deliver.

It was one hectic day.

Energy: HIGH as a kite..no really.. multitasking galore.

Sleep: HORRIBLE!! No sleep.. Tossed and turned all night. Decided to switch bed sides and oh man.. Next morning had to do a smudge the place to ward off the spirits so I can sleep!!!

Food: 1/2 Cin-raisin Bagel with Cream Cheese n the dark stuff.. you know. Coffee!!

Lunch: Yes, leftover green chile enchiladas. Two please, a 1/2 cup of cuban black beans (yes, I made them) and 1/4 cup of rice.

Dinner: Mexican Squash w/corn, onions, tomatoes and salad.

Dessert: a bowl of kix.

Is this day over YET? BTW I would like to report that I live close to an IN N OUT and man oh man.. it smells sooooo good.

Still no meat, no booze!! Almost there.. almost!

  1. Relearning how to cook & establishing new habits...

They say that it takes 21 days to relearn new habits. I finally hit day 23 of no red meat or alcohol. This experience has been wonderful to share with my mom. My mom had this weekend off and it’s been a treat to just share some time with her. We talked about food and the psychological relationship we have /our family has with food.

On Thursday, we went to Tijuana where we ate Tacos El Gordo. I managed not to give in to temptation and instead directed my attention on how tacos al pastor are prepared. She managed to go twenty days without eating meat. Being that she's a chef, she helped me with this weekend with creating healthy recipes. We went shopping at the Echo Park Farmer’s Market and Whole Foods. Before I get into some of the new food we tried, I’ll share a bit more about the 40-day liver cleanse.

A big realization this week, it is much harder to eliminate refined flour since I'm love all kinds of pan. I did find a bread vendor at the Echo Park Farmer's Market that makes vegan & gluten free bread. This Frenchman is amazing. Also at that market is a lettuce vendor who has Nizuna (nizuma sp?) lettuce that is red and wiry. The best part is that it tastes like papas. With some organic eggs I got from another food vendor, I made an omelette with Nizuna. All the flavor without the added carbs is a good thing. The sugar elimination hasn’t been as hard, maybe because I took a hiatus from drinking alcohol. So far, the changes have been a good start. I also noticed that I’m hungrier. Maybe it’s because my metabolism is changing with this diet.

One of the new restaurants I tried this past weekend was Native Foods in Culver City. I had a dish with brown rice, sautéed cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and red bell pepper and tofu. It was tasty & filling. It seemed very easy to make. I asked my mom how I would prepare it. The key is blanching the vegetables. Something so easy to do and makes it easy to prepare stir-fry or salads.

At Whole Foods market, we got some organic ground chicken meat, clams, and salmon. I also bought at Trader Joe’s a Harvest Grain blend. I cooked it with a clove of garlic, seasoned with some tumeric (part of 40day cleanse), salt & pepper. I’ll try to recreate the dish from Native Foods with the Harvest Grain as a base and add the blanched kale, cabbage, broccoli and red bell pepper.

My mom cooked the organic ground chicken with garlic and tomatoes then added a tomato & basil sauce. Another great find at Trader Joe’s was a rice flour fusilli pasta. It was so tasty! She also made clams without wine. I broiled the salmon with a different glaze made with Balsamic glaze, salt, pepper, garlic, and furikaki seasoning. I usually make the glaze with miso, garlic, soy sauce and brown sugar. Since I’m trying to reduce the sugar intake, I changed it up a bit.

Part of the changes, I’ve also taken up walking and dance classes. Little by little: 21 days + all these add up to healthy changes.

    Onward
